A troubled 15-year-old boy attempting to cope with the recent death of his mother sets out to research Dr. Max Gerson’s claims of a diet that can cure cancer as his first assignment for home-schooling

in this documentary from filmmaker Steve Kroschel (Avalanche, Dying to Have Known). Garrett is a boy who has always been close to nature. He lives on a reserve with a menagerie of orphaned animals, and over the years he’s become especially sensitive to the nutritional needs of the diet-sensitive animals he’s charged with caring for. When Garrett’s mother suffers a tragic and untimely death, the boy falls into a dangerous downward spiral and nearly flunks out of school. Increasingly concerned for Garrett’s well-being and determined to strengthen their bond despite the many challenges on the horizon, his father makes the decision to begin home-schooling the distressed teen. Neuromarketing could make mind reading the ad-man’s ultimate tool

Neuroscience and marketing had a love child a few years back. Its name – big surprise – is neuromarketing, and the ugly little fellow is growing up. Corporate pitchmen have always wanted to get inside our skulls. The more accurately they can predict how we’ll react to stimuli in the marketplace, from prices to packages to adverts, the more money they can pull from our pockets and transfer to their employers’ coffers. ((( The alternative, would be to ask us what we really wanted.. Now, who knows what they really want? So we’ll have to use the drill to dig.. )))

But picking the brains of consumers hasn’t been easy. Marketers have had to rely on indirect methods to read our thoughts and feelings. They’ve watched what we do in stores or tracked how purchases rise or fall in response to promotional campaigns or changes in pricing. And they’ve carried out endless surveys and focus groups, asking us what we buy and why. ((( I used to do focus groups when I was a kid, I guess I fit the market well.. a handful of us would be invited to discuss what our feelings were about a certain product or line of products of ad campaign, we would be pampered and watched behind a two may mirror.. a kind of good cop interrogation.. Now what, the fMRI? can’t imagine this’ll take long to show up at Guantanamo! )))

The results have been mixed at best. People, for one thing, don’t always know what they’re thinking ((( right ))) and even when they do, they’re not always honest in reporting it. Traditional market research is fraught with bias and imprecision, which forces companies to fall back on hunches and rules of thumb.

But thanks to recent breakthroughs in brain science, companies can now actually see what goes on inside our minds when we shop. Teams of academic and corporate neuromarketers have begun to hook people up to functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machines to map how their neurons respond to products and pitches. ((( lots of fun with PORN i bet )))

Last year, the journal Neuron published an article titled Neural Predictors of Purchases by a group of scholars from three leading US universities. The researchers described how they had used brain imaging to monitor the mental activity of shoppers as they evaluated products and prices on computer screens.

By watching how different neural circuits light up or go dark during the buying process, the researchers found they could predict whether a person would end up purchasing a product or passing it up. They concluded, after further analysis of the results, that “the ability of brain activation to predict purchasing would generalise to other purchasing scenarios”. ((( and what will this kinda thing to to women’s self esteems? Some Like it Hot, or Actually 87.832% like it hot.. )))

The American business magazine Forbes heralded the study as a milestone in business, saying it marked the first time researchers have been able “to examine what the brain does while making a purchasing decision”. ((( and politicians, think how the OBAMA Campaign of 2008 won the best marketing capping of the year, beating out Apple and McDonalds )))

At McLean Hospital, a prestigious psychiatric institution run by Harvard University, an advertising agency recently sponsored an experiment in which the brains of half-a-dozen young whiskey drinkers were scanned. The goal, according to a report in Business Week, was “to gauge the emotional power of various images, including college kids drinking cocktails on spring break, twentysomethings with flasks around a campfire, and older guys at a swanky bar”. The results were used to fine-tune an ad campaign for the maker of Jack Daniels. ((( nice one )))

A new group of high-tech consulting firms, with names like NeuroFocus and Neuroconsult, have sprung up to help companies deploy neuromarketing. The neuromarketers are playing a prominent role at Re:think, the Advertising Research Foundation’s annual convention, held in New York this week. The New York Times reports its agenda is “filled with presentations” on the new scientific approaches to marketing. ((( = scientific approaches to propaganda = scientific approaches to tyranny )))

In the future, marketers won’t have to ask us what we think or try to decipher our intentions from our actions. They’ll be able to monitor what we think directly – at the cellular level. That’s good news for companies. Not only will they be able to spend their marketing budgets more efficiently, but they’ll be able to wield more influence over the purchases we make. ((( how can you let a sentence like this go by? WHO IS PAYING ATTENTION.. HELLO )))z

The question, though, is when does influence become manipulation? If businesses can know more about what and how we think than we do ourselves, they’ll also gain the power to control our perceptions and even our behaviour in ways we won’t be able to detect. If it achieves even part of its potential, neuromarketing promises to tip the balance of power in the marketplace from the buyer to the seller.

Kilts was excited, for he knew that this region of the brain is commonly associated with our sense of self. Patients with damage in this area of the brain, for instance, often undergo drastic changes in personality; in one famous case, a mild-mannered 19th-century railworker named Phineas Gage abruptly became belligerent after an accident that destroyed his medial prefrontal cortex. More recently, M.R.I. studies have found increased activity in this region when people are asked if adjectives like “trustworthy” or “courageous” apply to them. When the medial prefrontal cortex fires, your brain seems to be engaging, in some manner, with what sort of person you are. If it fires when you see a particular product, Kilts argues, it’s most likely to be because the product clicks with your self-image.

  • Central hub in the Microbial Home system.
  • Consists of a methane digester, which converts bathroom waste solids and vegetable trimmings into methane gas that is used to power a series of functions in the home.
  • The hub is designed as a repositionable kitchen island, including a chopping surface with vegetable waste grinder, a gas cooking range, a glass tank that shows energy reserves and glass elements showing pressure, volume and readiness of compost sludge.
  • Materials used in the design are copper, cast iron, glass and bamboo.

  • Twin-walled terra cotta evaporative cooler is at its center, the compartments and chambers vary in wall thicknesses and volumes, and are designed to keep different types of food at different optimal temperatures.
  • The outer surface of the cooler is warmed by hot water pipes, which have been pre-heated by the methane digester in the Microbial Home system.

  • The beehive is designed to allow us a glimpse into the world of these industrious creatures and to harvest the honey that they produce.
  • It consists of two parts: entry passage and flower pot outside, and glass vessel containing an array of honeycomb frames, inside.
  • The glass shell filters light to let through the orange wavelength which bees use for sight.
  • The frames are provided with a honeycomb texture for bees to build their wax cells on.
  • Smoke can be released into the hive to calm the bees before it is opened, in keeping with established practice.

  • The design concept shown in this Probe is a wall of glass cells containing a live bacterial culture that emits soft green light by bioluminescence.
  • It has been created using a technique where individual cells are hand-blown into a steel frame which is freestanding or hung on the wall.
  • Each cell is connected via silicon tubes to the food source, (which is drawn from a reservoir at the base) creating a closed loop system for the living material.
  • The food source could potentially be drawn out of the sludge from the methane digester that forms the centerpiece of the kitchen in the Microbial Home.

  • A concept for home-centered health monitoring and diagnosis, with the focus on early warning and prevention of disease.
  • Analytical functions are designed into the bathroom, where cutting-edge technology analyzes your body constantly and non-invasively, looking for trends in your health, symptoms of wellness and disease, giving advice and warnings where necessary.
  • Sensors behind the bathroom mirror that observe the condition of your skin, eyes and retina.
  • Breath falling on the mirror is analyzed for chemicals than indicate gum disease, tooth decay, dietary problems, alcohol and drug misuse.
  • Brushing your teeth can reveal evidence contained in oral microbiota, saliva and tooth plaque.
  • The urine and feces that you deposit into the lavatory are analyzed.
  • Showering can reveal the condition of your skin (including its microbiota population), hair and sweat.
  • Evidence collected from these multiple sources will be integrated and analyzed. An intelligent wall-mirror-screen can project back at you a bodily health map, highlighting areas where changes are occurring or attention is needed and suggesting solutions.

Paternoster Plastic Waste Up-cycler

  • A concept for a domestic plastic waste up-cycler that uses mycelium to break down plastic packaging waste.
  • The paternoster waste up-cycler concept utilizes the properties of fungi that have powerful enzymes and decomposing power.
  • A mycelium attached to plastic, would have the ability to decompose and metabolize the plastic.
  • In this concept the plastics are ground into small chips and mixed with a fungal starter culture in a glass canister, which is slotted into a compartment of the ‘paternoster’ system.
  • A hand-cranked conveyor moves the canisters along a circuit within a dark cavity. Each week plastic grounds are mixed with mycelium.
  • It takes several weeks to break down the plastic or other waste material.
  • At late stages in the cycle the contents are exposed to daylight (via an aperture) and air allowing the mycelium to sprout delicious mushroom fruit, ready to eat. The decomposing waste can be molded into shapes.
  • The paternoster is made out of plywood and copper, and uses off the shelf bottles and containment canisters.

Inspired by this guy, I just got a fresh batch of business cards from moo.com. There’s not really enough space on a business card to explain yourself in any detail so I thought I’d extend it using augmented reality. I recorded a short video bio and created a 3D grid of coloured planes. These planes are updated with the colours from the video and extruded depending on the level of brightness.

In a way we have really resolved the problem of the increasing pollution from advertisement. Given the implications of social augmented reality, we should anticipate a world that we will be forced to subscribe too.

I want to make art with augment reality bombs.. you know : code that you leave behind and relative to its social stickiness = it grows like a layer of social fungus on the environment. Bits and bytes will have to evolve to make their way through the looking glass and out of the swamp. Their evolution will certainly involve colonizing our world.

We need a web service that allows you to created 3D code.. that is lets say you want a simple graphic representation of a heart – a song and a message pop out when your sweetheart points her device at it. So you can print the paper heart.. or order a 3D object .. like a ring with the heart (the code embedded) and these objects can be left around.. given as gifts.. function as business cards.. whatever..

We need a bridge to an internet of things… a way to embed content (video / audio, etc) into our physical environment rather than our weblogs.. then we have to find a way to give it to the children to figure out.

When we are gone, will the fish tell our story? Rather, what story will it be?

 The Bush administration slated the initial deployment of a missile defense system for summer 2004, a move criticized as “completely political,” employing untested technology at great expense. A more appropriate criticism is that the system might seem workable; in the logic of nuclear war, what counts is perception. Both US planners and potential targets regard missile defense as a first-strike weapon, intended to provide more freedom for aggression, including nuclear attack. And they know how the US responded to Russia’s deployment of a very limited ABM system in 1968: by targeting the system with nuclear weapons to ensure that it would be instantly overwhelmed. Analysts warn that current US plans will also provoke a Chinese reaction. History and the logic of deterrence “remind us that missile defense systems are potent drivers of offensive nuclear planning,” and the Bush initiative will again raise the threat to Americans and to the world.

China’s reaction may set off a ripple effect through India, Pakistan, and beyond. In West Asia, Washington is increasing the threat posed by Israel’s nuclear weapons and other WMD by providing Israel with more than one hundred of its most advanced jet bombers, accompanied by prominent announcements that the bombers can reach Iran and return and are an advanced version of the US planes Israel used to destroy an Iraqi reactor in 1981. The Israeli press adds that the US is providing the Israeli air force with “`special’ weaponry.” There can be little doubt that Iranian and other intelligence services are watching closely and perhaps giving a worst-case analysis: that these may be nuclear weapons. The leaks and dispatch of the aircraft may be intended to rattle the Iranian leadership, perhaps to provoke some action that can be used as a pretext for an attack.

Immediately after the National Security Strategy was announced in September 2002, the US moved to terminate negotiations on an enforceable bioweapons treaty and to block international efforts to ban biowarfare and the militarization of space. A year later, at the UN General Assembly, the US voted alone against implementation of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and alone with its new ally India against steps toward the elimination of nuclear weapons. The US voted alone against “observance of environmental norms” in disarmament and arms control agreements and alone with Israel and Micronesia against steps to prevent nuclear proliferation in the Middle East–the pretext for invading Iraq. A resolution to prevent militarization of space passed 174 to 0, with four abstentions: US, Israel, Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands. As discussed earlier, a negative US vote or abstention amounts to a double veto: the resolution is blocked and is eliminated from reporting and history. [1]

tells Israeli activist:    don’t separate social issues from politics

Daniel Cohn-Bendit, one of the leaders of the 1968 student protest in France and today a member of the European Parliament representing the Green Party, appeared this week at an event of the students’ union in Jerusalem and analyzed the social protest in Israel from his perspective. “Everyone sees me as a reflection of something that happened in the previous century,” he began in his address to the dozens of students who came to hear him at a city center cafe. “I’m very proud, but I really think that it’s not connected to me, but to a moment in history when people take to the streets. Suddenly they feel that they’re making history, that they can change the pace of history, its direction.”

Cohn-Bendit called on the leaders of the protest not to be deterred from entering politics and exerting influence from inside. The attitude of staying away from politics, he says, led to the major failure of the students vis-a-vis the government of Charles de Gaulle, which was reelected during the protest because the demonstrators were reluctant to enter traditional politics. “The moment you march in the streets you’re part of politics, you’re defying political forces.”

But above all Cohn-Bendit emphasized that he also visited Birzeit University on the West Bank yesterday and met with Palestinian students, because it won’t be possible to conduct the social discussion separate from the political discussion.

“If 8 percent of the gross domestic product goes to the settlements, then there’s no money for social welfare. You’ll have to choose and if you don’t you’ll lose out. There’s no other choice,” he said. “I really think, from my experience, that a movement loses out when it doesn’t put things on the table. You can argue whether or not the Palestinians are right, but you have to conduct the discussion. At the moment you have a black hole in your awareness. You’ve achieved a lot, but only if you conduct this discussion will you be able to make a real change. You already have a welfare state. But in the settlements. You must deal with this problem.

You’re right that Israel is a democracy, but up to the wall, only up to the wall. Beyond the wall the occupation is like the French occupation in Algeria.”

Another piece of advice that Cohn-Bendit gave the students was to maintain their solidarity. [[like, sleeping with each other usually works..]]

Well its clear that the disconnect between family earnings and military expenditures is significant. People must be allowed to know what they are paying for. We must not ask for a better supermarket, we must demand better products!!

Mark LeVine met with Aloni in Ramallah as he was beginning rehearsals for a production of “Waiting for Godot” with students from the Jenin Freedom Theatre and continued the conversation in the United States. The US premiere of the production will take place at the Miller Theatre in New York, on October 18.Udi Aloni is a well-known Israeli filmmaker, theatre director, writer and activist, whose recent work includes such films as Forgiveness, Local Angel, and Kashmir: Journey to Freedom. His new book, What Does a Jew Want?: On Binationalism and Other Specters, is published by Columbia University Press (2011).

Mark LeVine: Your book starts off with a seemingly provocative question, one which would seem to be impossible to answer. How can anyone claim to answer what Jews collectively want, or Muslims or Christians for that matter?

Udi Aloni: The idea for the book arose from the contradictions that I felt exists between my work as an artist, as a writer, and as an activist. In particular, a difficulty in expressing how one can move from one’s particularity – in my case as an Israeli Ashkenazi Jew - to a universal ethic and aesthetic, and to create a new identity in the process. The task, I suppose, is to show people that you can open yourself to your most dreaded “other”, that you can forge relationships outside of your group that are even more meaningful than the ones that have always defined you.

To do that, I had to accept the position of speaking from weakness and vulnerability, in contrast to the strength Israelis and American Jews imagine they have (but are really afraid that they don’t possess). I argue that from this weakness, we can create new possibilities, or openings.

ML: Edward Said was clearly a big influence on you, it seems. How does a Palestinian thinker help you gain a deeper understanding of your own identity as a Jew?

UA: Said was very important, especially his work “Freud and the Non-European” and the way he read in Freud, who of course was Jewish, the kind of “unresolved sense of identity” that clearly exists in Israeli and Palestinian identities as well. My book opens with a quote from Said about Freud, asking whether the kind of “deeply undetermined history” of Israel/Palestine “could ever become the not-so-precarious foundation in the land of Jews and Palestinians of a bi-national state in which Israel and Palestine are parts, rather than antagonists, of each other’s history and underlying reality”.

Reading Said’s book was so different from reading a standard academic text. It made me realise the importance of being both intellectual and emotional at the same time, to not allow the two modalities to split our understanding of the realities on the ground. So this led me to ask how I can be totally active, responsible and engaged at the same time as a writer, without losing my art. What Does a Jew Want? is the outcome of this process.

ML: But Freud is seemingly so out of style right now. Why is he, and psychoanalysis, so important for you?

UA: For me it comes down to forgiveness, which is also the name of one of myfilms. I’m drawing a line between me and what I would call a kind of positivist activism in the US. There are people I adore, like Chomsky and others on the left, who give the feeling that if you just tell people the truth, stop corporate manipulation, etc, then people will choose the right thing. But this is clearly not the full truth. There is also a trauma zone that prevents the truth from changing people.

Even if you show people the truth time and time again, they will still be blind to it. And so, for example, the demonstrators who march for housing in Tel Aviv couldn’t see the link between their struggle and the Palestinian refugees’ longing for home. American Jews can be so liberal in the US and yet use proto-fascist language when it comes to Israel.

One possible conclusion is that these people are just evil or duplicitous, but I don’t believe that. Rather, there is clearly a social unconscious that blinds people to the truth. This is beyond changing individual consciousness or having a logical conversation. It can be an infuriating experience to invoke logic and see that people don’t understand your arguments, and this is in part why the left often becomes so angry and bitter. Psychoanalytic theory helps us understand why people don’t get it, so to speak. As Said understood, and as [Slavoj] Zizek – who recently worked with me in Ramallah – does too, psychoanalysis offers us tools to dig in, to figure out, to understand what is in all of us that makes us so blind, so hardened to the truth.

ML: Of course, in the Jewish case, the sources of this trauma are clear, centuries of anti-Semitism culminating in the Holocaust. How can art help overcome, or at least transcend, such a powerful trauma that has been so successfully integrated into a [form of] colonial-nationalist politics?

UA: For me, art, theory, and action function like the Holy Trinity. The one is three and the three are one. Or perhaps it is better to say: each is a means for the other and an end in itself. For example, when I come to Palestinians as an Israeli Jew, I’m don’t come with my ideology only, but also with my identity, my feelings, and my own language, the same way a lover relates to the one he or she loves. I could say that when one tries to be with Palestinians but belongs to the culture that oppresses them, this “being-with” necessitates baring one’s hands and soul like a lover, with all one’s contradictory parts. That is the only way we can attempt to create a true togetherness.

ML: What role does bi-nationalism play in this process and, through it, in your book?

UA: When I make my art in order to create a binational language, a mutual space for all of us, I have to use all of these tools and bring all sides together, rather than trying to keep them isolated and separate. In this context, the question in the book’s title, What does a Jew Want? is like Freud’s question, “What does a woman want?” It’s not a question to answer, but rather the start of an investigation, of opening up from this Israeli particularist identity within which I grew up – and trying to reach out, beyond the many layers that still prevent us from envisioning a different, more universal identity.

This problem has always plagued the left in Israel, and I suppose in a sense I’m trying to go where the Zionist left failed and, as we say in Hebrew, do a tikkun, or healing for it. At the same time, this process has totally motivated my activism and art to cross borders, to move to Jenin to teach at the Freedom Theatre, to work and to live with Palestinians. This is part of finding out who I am as a Jew, which is something profound – but often seems difficult for others to understand.

ML: Especially if they are still living in a traditional nationalist Jewish or Palestinian identity.

UA: Absolutely, yes. But this is precisely what my relationship with Juliano Mer-Khamis [the well-known film maker and founder of the Freedom Theatre who was assassinated in April 2011] was based on. He was, because of his parents, both Jewish-Israeli and Palestinian-Arab. Working with him, and the amazing students and colleagues at the Freedom Theatre, taught me how to think as a Palestinian Jew – and that’s how you reach bi-nationalism.

ML: What is a Palestinian Jew? It’s a very old term, no? Before 1948, all Jews in Palestine were called that. So it seems like you’re going backward instead of forward with that identity, not to mention constructing an identity that is sure to alienate most Israelis or American Jews.

UA: Well, there are “American Jews” and “French” or “Italian” Jews. Why can’t they understand me as a Palestinian Jew? I am not nationalist anyway, that is not the point. To be within an identity is not something holy; it’s the beginning of a discourse, not the end of it. The problem is when people make it dogmatic.

ML: True, Herzl saw Zionism as a means to an end, a tool to end anti-Semitism, not the end in itself.

UA: Yes, exactly. And here, I would say that those who insist on a one-state solution, in an alienated way, based on egalitarian relationships between individuals, are not offering the most viable or even desirable alternative. I use the term bi-national because to say “one state”, like South Africa, doesn’t acknowledge the particularity that each community still wants to retain in any solution to the conflict. It doesn’t recognise that we’re all in a universal world, but yet, at the same time, we want to build that universality out of particularities, the particular places and cultures in which we stand.

So when I say I’m a Palestinian Jew, it means that this is where I begin the dialogue, not necessarily where I want to end. Said says it so well in “Freud and the Non-European”, where he explains that he does not expect that Jews and Palestinians will become one people, but that, within these tensions, something new will arise that is one at the same time. In short, this is not a naive form of universality.

ML: But isn’t bi-nationalism still just a utopian dream with no practical reality?

UA: Look, we are like Noah’s Ark, we keep the language of bi-nationalism alive while the Israeli state is becoming more unbearable, more fascist, all the time. But when this discourse finally collapses – and eventually it will have to collapse – we can offer something positive as a new alternative.

In fact it’s already starting to happen, with the “J14″ social movement that sprang up around the housing protests this summer. On the one hand, it’s easy to be cynical, since for the most part the leaders refused to make the obvious connection between social justice for Israelis and the much more basic national justice for Palestinians.

But the protests did show that people are open to new ideas. You can’t imagine how important it is that for the first time Israelis did not look to the West and the US as their model, but in fact looked towards young Arabs, towards the revolutions in the Arab world. This is incredible and will have far-reaching implications for Israeli identity in the long run.

ML: How has your work with the BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement – which, on the surface, should have alienated you more from mainstream Israel and Jews – affected this?

UA: My work with BDS has been crucial to my personal development. Because I joined BDS, I found a new solidarity, and I was able to open a true dialogue with Palestinians. In Hebrew, there is a play on words here: I moved from seeing Palestinians merely as the “other” (acher in Hebrew) – who, according to good left Zionist discourse should be “recognised” and “respected”, so long as it doesn’t actually demand anything of Israel – to seeing them as a brother [ach], someone with whom I share a common identity, who shapes me just as I shape him.

I am not trying to be naive here. I don’t think working with BDS will “bring the revolution”, but we are creating a language that will help us to survive this unbearable present and create an opening to a new understanding. If for no other reason than the fact that this situation cannot last much longer.

ML: Can you talk a bit more about how BDS actually makes much deeper collaboration possible, since many critics of BDS claim it actually prevents collaboration between Israelis and Palestinians?

UA: Because in making this leap, you open yourself up, you create trust, and you can create a new identity. My support for BDS allowed me to work with the Freedom Theatre on Waiting for Godot. There are very hard moments in Godot; but there are also those small moments of true friendship and fidelity which reflect the possibilities that open up when you take this leap, embrace the other, and become brothers.

I should say, though, that I didn’t go into Waiting for Godot trying to make great art, but rather out of responsibility to Juliano. And yet it turned out to be great art, not just a good deed. And this is the vision of Said – and of thinkers such as Adorno or Benjamin he admired – to create high cultural elements, great art, as the core of a new identity and a new language.

ML: Are you hopeful for the future – despite all the negative realities of the present?

UA: Yes, I am. Let’s look at BDS. When I first joined about four years ago, people were literally ready to kill me. But now I’m not so isolated; there are people who are beginning to listen. The growing number of Israeli and diaspora Jews who accept and even work within the BDS framework are becoming less marginalised. We are not merely seen as traitors anymore. I just participated in an amazing panel with other progressive Jewish activists and artists on BDS in a synagogue in Brooklyn. 250 Jews came and the discussion was very well received.

Let’s not think of ourselves as marginalised just because the organised Jewish community says that we are. In fact, as I show in the book, the more you want to be Jewish, the more you should support Palestinians. Put another way, to fulfil your particular identity you need to think universally.

ML: It is like your film Forgiveness, no? You need to ask for forgiveness, and yet forge a new identity that transcends oppression and victimhood at the same time. To not merely deconstruct, as the great philosopher [Jacques] Derrida taught us, but reconstruct something new.

UA: Derrida taught me so much, especially his last lectures in New York, after 9/11, when it was clear he was dying of cancer. He was, physically, becoming the “spectre” that he famously wrote about, but his call to show absolute hospitality even to our perceived enemies made him more relevant than ever. My film Local Angel was born of a confrontation with that angel named Derrida, and my filmForgiveness was born of the wish to hug him and hold back the wind that was carrying him away.

And that experience led me to end my book with the following prayer, by Martin Luther King Jr: “Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.” Let us pray that the stars we see will not be the missiles over Tel Aviv, Beirut, and Gaza announcing with their shining tails the apocalyptic war bequeathed to us by the Israeli government. Let us hope that the stars are of grace and justice. Stars that can open the gates to our mutual Middle East, for life.

The whole thing was something else. When I woke up, I was marooned on some beach in the bayou. We had set out on some project which had required we become immune to alcohol. Someone decided that it was best to go with the flow lets say. By the time the planes were wheels up, we had each already lost control. When we got off the train we lost two tripods that belonged to one dear friend and we met Julia. I remember ridiculous amounts of luggage. Our differences were no difference to us.

What happened to us to decide that we could all share a room? What a room. It was tiny; we piled in horizontally.. I think Balé and Julia took the space on the floor between the bed and the wall. Today, Julia says that we all snored together, an orchestra in symphony. Back then, I would say: Balé, record! This is the film. You are involvng yourself in a romance, and your romance belongs to the film!

There was a lot of love, and that made everything electric, on tippy toes. It was by all means a romance, and as with all adventures which share this quality, we all fell in love – at least. Something no wealth could buy, we afforded ourselves. It was compelling: so much cunningness, so much flirt.

I think that we identified with Manitas and his family and the music of the Gitanes because they are art warriors, they carry a culture out of the dustbin of the West, they speak ancient languages of cosmic evolution which breathes winds of revolution. We all feel like we’ve been fucked out of our freedoms by the masters of mankind. And revolution through art is what we choose to work on.

There’s some amazing things coming down the healthcare pipeline and Daniel Kraft ( @daniel_kraft ) knows a “little” about all of them. We asked him to take us on a rollercoaster-journey through them.

Organovo: Printing Organs

The “ink” in the bioprinting process employed by Organovo is composed of spheres packed with tens of thousands of human cells. These spheres are assembled or “printed” on sheets of organic biopaper. The Possibilities for Transplants
Organ printing allows new tissue to replace diseased tissue. Since new tissue can be developed from cell sources from your own body, rejection of transplanted tissue is not an issue. The cells can be taken from youthful progenitor cells in your bone marrow to replace the older diseased cells. The cells ability to self-assemble means they will organize themselves into a functional tissue after being positioned.

This is where Organovo stands out: the challenges in using stem cells for medical therapies have shown that the results of injecting cells in solution are limited – cells alone can only do so much. But a functional piece of tissue from the patient’s own progenitor cells, which can be matured outside the organism, ex vivo, under conditions similar to those it will see in vivo, can add tremendously to the therapeutic power of the cells themselves.

Tissue on Demand

The company anticipates becoming the leader in surgical tools made from human cells; providing raw material in the form of tissue for surgeons use. According to Organovo CEO Keith Murphy, “We expect our tissue printing technology to become the underlying foundation for 3D tissue research in the future. TransAgriculture is a one-day manifestation featuring penetrating introductions to the field, lectures on guerrilla and avant-gardening, and bioart forms.

Bruce Sterling was speaking at this event. One of the founders of the cyberpunk movement in science fiction, and known for creating new words or neologisms that he finds are missing.

Internal flora (25:04) [[ so in 2008 Bruce Sterling is talking about the organisms that make up our GI! Wow! So Bruce goes off on this rift, and he's calling it transagriculture on a personal level. He says that nobody has practiced agriculture on an internal level, other than antibiotics, what he describes as equivalent to intestinal napalm. He imagines that you could engineer combinations of organisms or the organisms themselves to serve you on a microbial level.

When I got interested in messing with my internal organisms, I did it because I became curious as to what were the possible reasons I was behaving and feeling the way I was. Why was I driven to eat, and how was I deciding what I was consuming? What was making me want a drink a day? Why was my body, why was my mind behaving the way it was? According to a recent National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimate, 90% of cells in the human body are bacterial, fungal, or otherwise non-human.[1] In that case, much of what was happening to me was connected to my microbiomic self. In accord, it is known that genes in the human microbiota far outnumber those in the human genome. [2]

I began a diagnostic intervention by limiting by consumption to specific foods and modes of ingestion, I supplemented with all sorts of natural products and beneficial organisms to stimulate my gastro-intestinal organry to detoxify, at the same time I ate and supplemented in order to build a healthy balance of Intestinal Fauna and Flora. The outcome was that I isolated a yeast which had grown out of control, and was turning me into a mushroom. A concern, as I am not yet ready to become a mushroom.

At the turn of the 20th century, Dr. Elias Metchnikoff wrote a groundbreaking book entitled Prolongation of Life. It inspired and initiated what came to be known as the Probiotic Revolution. Metchnikoff, a Nobel laureate who discovered the cell scavengers known as phagocytes and other immune system components, documented in the book what he believed to be a direct link between human longevity and the necessity of maintaining a healthy balance of beneficial microorganisms within the body. Having worked considerably over a year to detoxify and and stimulate good Intestinal health, I am persuaded that internal agriculture, that is: the farming of a balanced and sustainable internal jungle can do much to augment one’s health. In particular, one can stimulate effective assimilation of nutrients from food intake and effective expulsion… causing one to think more clearly, sleep more effectively, and avoid the death process more efficiently.

Contrapuntally, it is possible that the consumption of toxic foods and products causing poor health and resulting in weak human beings is an essential principle of the suppression and mechanization of human societies. (56:29) Sterling asks biologists, “you can feed rats a perfect rat food, that makes them the best specimen possible, why don’t you invent one for the human race… ?” Perhaps a perfect food has been invented for the human race, and that is a sort of toxic sugar sludge heavy on meaty and grease. The McDonalds and other fast food chains receive huge government subsidies, and enjoy celebrity status in contemporary culture around the world. Poor nutrition is deeply institutionalized, and wether that is a direct population control mechanism or an accidental product of industrial food consumption, well.

In the United States, the institutional benchmark for national success, constipation is rampant.[1] The western diet causes you to be full of shit!

So fooding is like self medicating, and that is a deeply personal science. I believe if individuals learn to process their own consumption for their benefit, they do a great deal to resist the tyranny of corporate hegemony which offers humans a very poor life. Foggy, with chronic pain and the sensation of living difficultly.

Knowing yourself on a metabolic level, involving yourself in your microbial social networks, is a common thread in developing a more independent self, a higher level of consciousness. What is seemingly beyond human control, is very much ours to mediate. ]]

This is because I don’t believe Israel will ever give up trying to control Palestinians, whether citizens of Israel or those living in the occupied territories.  Under a two state solution there would be Israel and a Palestinian bantustan.

I have been struck by your dismissal of the one state idea as something almost absurd, and would like to understand why you see it this way. Is there no hope that Israelis and Palestinians might live together as white and black people do, after the fall of apartheid, in South Africa?
